Gstaad, Switzerland

On Sunday, Feb. 5th we traveled to Gstaad.  It is located about a 2 hour train ride north east of Vevey.  If fact, to get to Gstaad, the train travels through Chateau'd-Oex, which is where we were last Sunday.  Whereas as last weekend it was very cold with limited visibility, this Sunday, even through it was still very cold, there was unlimited visibility.  The view of the Alps was amazing.  The pictures we took do not do their magnificence justice.

Gstaad is in the German speaking region of Switzerland.  It has a population of about 3,200 and is 3,450 feet above sea level. It is one of the most exclusive and largest areas for skiing and snow boarding in the world.  It is where many celebrities either own homes or go for vacation.    Part of the movie, Return of the Pink Panther, was filmed here.

Dear Lindsay,
This is an all girls school in Les Avant on the way to Gstaad. Le Chatelaud is all girls, very remote in a town with what we would call a diner. This is where parents send their girls that must behave better and learn more.  I am sure you will strive to never be a candidate.

The Swiss Goldenpass train route is one of the world's most scenic train rides.

Yes, these are real people, not Hollywood plants

The building in the top right is the Gstaad Palace Hotel.  It is ranked as one of the best hotels in the world.  The hotel has 104 rooms.  The weekend rates, for winter, range from $680 for a Single Classic room to $15,175 for the Penthouse Suite (3 Bedrooms and a Parlor).  The summer rates are $480 and $10,600 respectively. We did not get to stay.

Looks very much like the Suisse version of Mt St Helens doesn't it?

Skiers on the ground and hang gliders getting ready to launch. Lots of fearless adventurers all around.

This was a great stop in the adventure  and we hardly noticed the 9 degree weather.
